Leafs target Marlie call-ups, again
By RYAN WOLSTAT, QMI Agency
The Maple Leafs will have to call on the Marlies.
Late last season, the likes of Joey Crabb, Darryl Boyce and Keith Aulie played quality minutes for the club and with injuries taking a bite out of the NHL roster, Dallas Eakins’ squad is about to get tapped again for reinforcements.
Knocks down on the farm have made things difficult for Brian Burke and Co., too, in terms of figuring out who to retrieve.
Top prospect Joe Colborne, who leads the Marlies with 19 points in 12 games was only set to return to AHL action on Friday night, following a three-game injury absence.
The Leafs might want to let Colborne regain his form and timing rather than throwing him to the wolves.
Fellow centre Boyce is also only now returning to full health.
Nazem Kadri could get the call, but he has just one goal and seven points in eight games so far. Marcel Mueller has 10 points in 12 games.
Wilson isn’t expecting a ton from any young potential call-up.
“They need to come in and play well, they’re with the Marlies for a reason, they’re not NHL-ready yet,” Wilson said.
Defenceman Matt Lashoff likely would have battled Cody Franson to replace Mike Komisarek, but he is lost for the season due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, Aulie has regressed, going pointless with an ugly minus-9 stat-line so far.
Veteran centre Mike Zigomanis has 15 points in 15 games but would have to clear waivers and the team might not be willing to risk putting him on them.
