Zigomanis makes his case to stick
By Terry Koshan, QMI Agency

TORONTO - Mike Zigomanis provided evidence on the weekend why hockey players have to be ready on moment’s notice, both physically and mentally.

Rather than just fill a Maple Leafs sweater for the two games against the Detroit Red Wings, the 30-year-old Zigomanis was effective in both outings, registering an assist in each game and winning a lion’s share of faceoffs.

With injuries to Tim Connolly and Tyler Bozak, Zigomanis, after he was cut by the Leafs last week, was recalled from the Toronto Marlies.

“You never know,” said Zigomanis, who has played in 197 NHL games with five teams since breaking in with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2002-03. “Whether it’s training camp, the season or playoffs, I have seen guys go up and down three times in the same week. I try telling the guys with the Marlies, always take care of your body, make sure you are in game shape.”

Zigomanis, who won 19 of 22 faceoffs against the Wings on Saturday, still is in tough to remain with the Leafs. Even with Connolly and Bozak questionable, Darryl Boyce and Philippe Dupuis remain ahead of him on the depth chart.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
