Clarke MacArthur isnít sure he likes where the NHL is going with the spate of suspensions in the pre-season.
ďI just think there is going to be no hitting in this game,Ē the Maple Leafs forward, who will miss the first two games of the regular season because he has been suspended, said on Saturday night.
ďThatís what is going to happen. No one wants to take five-, 10-game suspensions. When you go to finish your hit, you really have to weigh the factors of that. A play like mine, I would turn away (if he had to do it over again) and not even go near him. But whatís done is done.Ē
MacArthur also missed the pre-season game Saturday night against the visiting Detroit Red Wings. On Friday night at Joe Louis Arena, MacArthur hit the Wingsí Justin Abdelkader in the head, and that was enough for NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, who has been a busy man, to suspend the Leaf. Head shots are to be taken out of the game and players are realizing the league is serious.
ďSo disappointing,Ē MacArthur said. ďItís such a grey area. I kind of skimmed his shoulder and clipped him in the head, and he comes back after me and starts sucker-punching me. Itís one thing is he is laying on the ice. Itís a tough call. They are trying to keep the game safe.Ē
