PHILADELPHIA - Darryl Boyce wasn’t about to let a face-first smash into the boards and yet another broken nose keep him out of his fight for a job.
So, after being clocked from behind by Flyers tough guy Jody Shelley in the second period of Wednesday’s 4-2 Leafs win, Boyce got back to work for the third.
“It was not a clean hit, for sure,” said Boyce, who is in a battle to win the fourth-line centre’s job with the team.
“I had to make sure I didn’t suffer a concussion, knew what point in the game it was and the score and then I was good to go.”
So, too, was his teammate, Jay Rosehill, who stood up for Boyce in a lengthy scrap with Shelley.
“The fact is not whether it was a dirty hit or not, a guy on my line went down,” Rosehill said.
“With our team, guys like that are going to have to answer to somebody.”
