Schenn contract 'an August issue'
By TERRY KOSHAN, QMI Agency

TORONTO - Don’t expect the Maple Leafs to re-sign defenceman Luke Schenn in the next several days.

“It’s more of an August issue,” Schenn’s agent, Don Meehan, said on Tuesday.

Leafs assistant general manager Claude Loiselle is probably going to be one of the point men in contract negotiations with Schenn, and he is on vacation.

Meehan also represents Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, another restricted free agent from the draft class of 2008. Talks with the Kings have not really got off the ground either.

Some in Leafs Nation are wondering why Schenn, who led National Hockey League defenceman in hits last year, has not yet been re-signed. But with other things on the NHL calendar that had to be done first — the signing of unrestricted free agents, preparing for salary arbitration (which Meehan is doing with client Zach Parise) — contract talks have not been on the front burner.

That should change in the coming weeks.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
