Host: Franson a 3rd of July parade guy
Used homophobic slur?

A Toronto Maple Leafs blog is questioning whether AM640 host Bill Watters used a homophobic slur to describe defenceman Cody Franson.

A post on Pension Plan Puppets brought to light a quote from Watters on his July 4 radio show, a day after the Gay Pride parade in Toronto, that it deemed questionable.

"The only ... you've got to look through his statistics, he's got some offensive flair, he is not what you would call a rugged, truculent, testosteronic guy ... He's more of a 3rd of July parade guy," the blog quotes Watters as saying when describing Franson, whom the Leafs had just acquired from the Nashville Predators.

The blog says it tried to get clarification from Watters about what he meant by calling Franson a "3rd of July parade guy" but has not heard back from the former NHL executive. Watters also questioned whether Franson was physical enough to qualify as a Brian Burke-style player.

"I just can't put a reason behind why you'd give up on a 6-foot-5 defenceman with offensive skill unless he's just a bit too soft," Watters said.
