CALGARY - It will no doubt be a difficult day for Dion Phaneuf.

And it has nothing to do with hockey and his much-anticipated return to Calgary.

Instead of skating with teammates at the Saddledome Wednesday and facing the local media for the first time since his trade last January, the former Flames defenceman will attend the funeral of his grandmother, Roma Phaneuf, who passed away this weekend at the age of 83 in Summerside, P.E.I.

Dion Phaneuf spent parts of five seasons with the Flames after the team drafted the Edmonton product in the first round, ninth-overall, in 2003.

He was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of January last season and named the storied franchise's latest captain this summer.

He opened the scoring in a 4-1 win over the Oilers Tuesday night with his first goal of the season and will be back in the lineup against the Flames Thursday night.
