In a city cursed by losing teams, the Maple Leafs and Argonauts have a rare November double-date against Montreal this weekend for games that mean a lot to their seasons.
With fans of both clubs heading up the 401 this weekend, CFL savvy Leafs hope they can set a tone for the Eastern Final against the Alouettes on Sunday by beating the Habs on Saturday.
“I’ll take Toronto on Sunday,” Saskatoon-born defenceman Luke Schenn said. “I live here now and I don’t want to cheer for Montreal in any sport. And I’d like to see a Toronto-Saskatchewan final.”
Maple, Ont’s, Luca Caputi cheered the Argos in the Doug Flutie-Don Matthews era.
“Hopefully they keep the Cinderella story going,” Caputi said. “I saw some of the guys on both teams jawing back and forth in the media early this week. That was kind of funny, I also met Cleo Lemon at a Blue Jays’ game this summer. I hope he has a big day.”
Nazem Kadri admitted he only watches the Grey Cup, but is getting pumped that the Argos might be in it.
“I heard a lot of fans are going down there. Hopefully, our city can go 2-0 this weekend.”
But there were some dissenters.
“I’ll say Montreal,” Lethbridge’s Kris Versteeg said. “Who’s the quarterback of Montreal? Anthony Calvillo? He’s a pretty good player. We don’t care that much in the West. The only guy I know is Henry Burris, he’s always dancing around with his shirt off.”
Added goalie James Reimer: “The only game that matters is Calgary-Saskatchewan.”
