There was no rest for the weary for Leafs who were not in the lineup for Wednesday's pre-season game against the Senators.
It's all part of the training camp grind, but the 40 or so Leafs were on the ice at the Mastercard Centre at 10 a.m. for an 80-minute full scrimmage.
Included in the group was all but two of the players who suited up the night before against the Ottawa Senators. It wasn't a punitive move but a chance to work on a number of areas but especially team defence.
"It was a live scrimmage but it was controlled in that every time guys got off the ice they were getting some feedback on what we want them to do, forechecking-wise and 'D' zone coverage-wise," Leafs assistant coach Rob Zettler said.
"It's a matter of mixing things up. Sometimes it's good to see it live (rather than in drills) so guys can feel it and live it a little bit before they get into some games."
While many people know Pat Burns as a gruff coach who didn't have any time for tomfoolery at the rink, Nick Foligno of the Senators recalls a man who gave a five-year-old kid the run of his office and some candy while his father Mike was at work.
"I remember going into the Leafs' locker room and sitting in his office, while the guys were getting ready for practice," said Nick, now a winger with the Ottawa Senators
"He was great. My dad would come home angry sometimes, but I always liked him."
Mike played for Burns from 1992-94. The cancer stricken Burns is at home in Magog, Que.
MAKING THEIR POINTS
Leafs coach Ron Wilson said Wednesday that he continues to have high hopes for centre Tyler Bozak, especially if he lasts a full season as Phil Kessel's centre.
"If Phil can be a 40-goal scorer this year, (Bozak's) probably going to be in on three quarters of those and then a few others, so 50-60 points would be a great year," Wilson said of the two linemates, who made their pre-season debut Wednesday night against the Senators. "He might be able to produce more if he continues to improve the way we think."
The Leafs travel to London, Ont. to meet the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night at the John Labatt Centre. It won't be a long trip, however. The team will have its gameday skate at the Mastercard Centre before boarding a bus at 3 p.m., four hours before puck drop ... The Flyers will be using several prospects against the Leafs but veteran Brian Boucher will get the start in net ... With rookies Ben Scrivens and James Reimer playing in the preseason game Wednesday, Jonas Gustavsson and J-S Giguere had a full workload at the lengthy practice scrimmage ... Rookie Nazem Kadri on the hip flexor injury that kept him out of one of the games at the recent Leafs' rookie tournament. "It's fine now, I've just got to keep stretching it out. There's a big difference between playing shinny hockey in the summer then getting into training camp with all the stops and starts. I've just got to loosen it up."
DID YOU KNOW?
Phil Kessel scored 176 goals in 86 games with the Madison Capital Bantam AAA team in 2001-2002. Oh yeah, he chipped in 110 assists, too.
