Gilmour on ice with Leafs
Franchise great helps out as coachBy LANCE HORNBY, QMI Agency
Doug Gilmour back with the Maple Leafs? No, it wasn't a blue and white mirage, although he wasn't wearing No. 93 and getting set to suit up Tuesday night to fill the hole at No. 1 centre. Gilmour, the head coach of the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs, was a guest assistant with Ron Wilson's staff Sunday morning with one of three practice groups at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke. The franchise's all-time playoff scoring leader held a couple of front office positions with the Leafs after his aborted one-game comeback in 2003 when he suffered a career ending knee injury. But the 47-year-old, a former team captain, wanted to be a coach and will start his third season as head coach in Kingston. Leafs general manager Brian Burke has made a tradition of having guest coaches at camp. Gilmour was joined Sunday by Dave Hakstol, head coach of the University of North Dakota, a program that has produced a couple of Leafs including goaltender Ed Belfour. |
