Maple Leafs swap prospects for D-man
By QMI Agency
The Maple Leafs added some depth and potential to the defence corps Friday, acquiring former first-round draft pick Matt Lashoff from the Tampa Bay Lightning for minor leaguers Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati.
Lashoff, a 23-year-old New Yorker, had eight goals and 16 assists in 68 games with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL last season. He also played five games with the Lightning, upping his career NHL total to 63.
With the glut of NHL calibre defenceman on the Leafs roster, Lashoff is likely tabbed to fill out the Marlies blueline. But he's also young enough to still have some upside.
Berry and Giliati, both forwards, played with the Marlies in 2009-10. Berry had three goals and four assists in 55 games while Giliati, who also spent time in the ECHL, had three goals and six assists in 25 games.
