TORONTO - If he survives the first two seasons of his captaincy, Dion Phaneuf may be here for a while.
The Maple Leafs defenceman is entering the third year of a six-year, $39-million contract extension he signed with the Calgary Flames in 2008. The final two of those have a no-movement clause meaning general manager Brian Burke won’t be able to deal him unless Phaneuf gives the green light.
“When he was in Calgary and able to add the no-movement clause, Dion took advantage of it,” Phaneuf’s agent Don Meehan said on Monday.
Neither the Leafs or Phaneuf is expecting such a decision, of course. But for the no-trade kicks in for the 2012-2013 season.
