HONOUR FOR BURKE

USA Hockey has created the Brendan Burke Internship, an annual 12-month term for a recent college graduate interested in pursuing hockey operations as a career.

It honours the late Brendan Burke, eldest son of the Leafs' general manager Brian Burke, who died in a car accident two months ago. Brendan was a hockey operations assistant with the hockey team at Miami University (Ohio), who hoped to follow in his father's NHL footsteps.

"Our family is obviously thrilled to have this internship founded in Brendan's name," Brian Burke said in a release. "It will forever preserve his memory and provide an opportunity each year for a young person to gain invaluable experience."

LOOSE LEAFS

When Fredrik Sjostrom heard a minor bantam team from his hometown of Kungalv on the west coast of Sweden was coming to town as part of a hockey tournament in Cornwall, he went to their hotel for a Q and A on Monday and got them into Tuesday morning's pre-game skate ... The Leafs were to give away 1,000 team sweaters at Tuesday's game as part of fan appreciation night.
