The Maple Leafs confirmed on Monday afternoon they've signed Toronto native and former St. Mike's Buzzer Brayden Irwin to a two-year NHL entry-level contract.
The 6-foot-5, 215 forward will be with the team the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old just wrapped up his fourth season with the University of Vermont Catamounts, the team the Leafs plucked Viktor Stalberg from. Irwin and Stalberg were teammates until this season.
In 39 games in 2009-10, Irwin led his team with 15 goals, 19 assists, seven power-play goals and — just as vital from general manager Brian Burke's perspective — 72 penalty minutes.
In four seasons at Vermont, he played 144 games with 38 goals and 44 assists with 194 penalty minutes.
In 2006-07 he was named to the Hockey East all-rookie team and was a Hockey East all-academic team member. He played two years with the Buzzers.
