WORTH HIS WEIGHT?

As impressed as the Leafs have been with the play of centre Tyler Bozak lately, coach Ron Wilson said that if the rookie can put on some beef in the off-season, he can be even more of an impact player.

"He's got to put some weight on to survive an NHL season and a long run in the playoffs," Wilson said Thursday. "He's had a rough year ... the illness cost him three or four weeks and the injury as well."

Wilson agreed that Bozak has flourished since being promoted from the Marlies in January.

"Some guys are better off playing in the NHL with NHL players," Wilson said. "Obviously with him, it helps playing on a line with Phil Kessel."

That line, which includes winger Nikolai Kulemin, had combined for nine goals and 11 assists in the five games before Thursday.

NET PLANS

Wilson has no plan in abandoning his policy of alternating games for his goaltending duo, even though Jonas Gustavsson has won four in a row. (Did people forget that J-S. Giguere shut out the Devils in his first game as a Leaf?)

"I think it's good for Jonas that he knows he's playing every other game," Wilson said. "In between games, he gets to work hard on his technique and that will make him a better goalie in the future."

LEAFS GET BLACKER

The Leafs signed Ontario Hockey League defenceman Jesse Blacker to a three-year entry level contract Thursday and the 18-year-old will report to the AHL Marlies.
