Kessel earning his keep

OTTAWA -- Phil Kessel is really warming up to this Battle of Ontario thing.

The speedy winger has been a thorn in the side of the Sens recently, collecting the Leafs' only regulation-time goal, then notching the shootout winner in a 2-1 victory over the Sens at Scotiabank Place on March 6.

He was at it again Tuesday night, opening the scoring at 11:20 of the first period on a sizzling snapshot that whizzed by Sens goalie Brian Elliott.

For all the fuss made about Brian Burke surrendering the farm by giving up two first-round and a second-round pick to the Boston Bruins for Kessel, the speedy winger now has 26 goals on the season and is well on his way to his second consecutive 30-plus goal campaign.

Keep in mind, too, that he missed the first five weeks of the season while he was recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. Judging by the way he ripped the puck past Elliott, the shoulder is fine, thank you very much.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
