ENOUGH OF PHANEUF
He's not quite as reviled as a New York Ranger, but defenceman Dion Phaneuf definitely got some of the Darcy Tucker treatment on the Island from their fans, who have very long memories where questionable hits are concerned. Phaneuf hammered Kyle Okposo in pre-season with the kind of hit that's under review these days, sending him off on a stretcher. He was booed each time he handled the puck.
"Most teams are physical against me, it's part of the game," Phaneuf said. "They're not happy with the hit in pre-season and obviously had a little edge against me."
LATE NIGHT BLUES
The Leafs couldn't control the elements after beating the Oilers on Saturday and their flight to Long Island was delayed weather on Saturday night as well as losing an hour with the time change and then having to play a 5 p.m. start.
Coach Ron Wilson could see that question coming after his team faded in a 4-1 loss to the Isles.
"The Islanders have played a lot, too (beating the Devils here the night before)," he said. "If some guys want to use (fatigue) as an excuse, fine, but we tried to manage everyone's ice time tonight. We just didn't play well."
