CHERRY'S A FAN
Don Cherry figures it will take "a year or two" for Brian Burke's rebuilding of the Maple Leafs to come to fruition.
Having said that, Cherry believes Burke will be successful when all is said and done.
"He's a winner," Cherry said Thursday. "All you have to do is look at his track record."
Cherry feels Burke's trade deadline deals basically were made to free up cap space. At the same time, Cherry loves the acquisition of defenceman Dion Phaneuf on the blue line back in late January.
"He's a bit wacko out there and that's a good thing," Cherry said of Phaneuf. "Guys have to keep their heads up when he's out there."
Cherry also said he has known recently acquired forward Luca Caputi since he was 14.
"Good player," Cherry said."
Healing defenceman Mike Komisarek admits watching Sunday's Olympic gold medal game between Team USA and Team Canada in Vancouver was tough.
Komisarek, of course, originally was selected to the 23-man Team USA roster but could not appear at the Games after undergoing shoulder surgery. He is expected to be back in time for training camp in September.
"Those are your buddies out there, so obviously you are rooting for them," Komisarek said. "They should be very proud of what they accomplished out in Vancouver."
