Leafs Report

Though unable to pull off a major deal Wednesday, general manager Brian Burke stated again he wants to try and fast track the Leafs to being a contender.

"You can see with the Phil Kessel deal that we are not interested in a five-year rebuilding plan here. We want to improve this team in a much more rapid time frame. In Anaheim (his last stop), it didn't take five years. We turned down a second and fourth pick to take (the Alex Ponikarovsky-Luca Caputi trade Tuesday), because this kid is ready to play."

Misbehaving centre Mikhail Grabovski should be rejoining the Leafs soon.

"I'm told somewhere within a week, hopefully," coach Ron Wilson said. "When his strength gets to 100%, he'll play."

Grabovski has been out two months with a broken wrist and got into hot water in Vancouver during the Olympics for his alleged role in a street brawl.

Dr. David Hastings, team doctor for the Leafs in the 1970s and a'80s has passed away at age 77. Hastings started with the Leafs in 1969 and helped such greats as Dave Keon, Darryl Sittler, and Wendel Clark ... Wilson isn't going to be tied to the pre-Olymopic break plan of using J-S Giguere in goal for most games and limit rookie Jonas Gustavsson to one a week. "We'll play it by ear," Wilson said.
