Komisarek delivers cheques

NEWARK -- An injured Mike Komisarek is now handing out cheques, not checks.

Shut down for the season with an ailing shoulder this week, the big-hearted Maple Leafs defenceman recently spent $75,000 of his own money to send kids from a cancer camp to a Leafs game.

"Unbelievable, isn't it?" coach Ron Wilson said Friday. "That's just the type of guy he is. I really feel bad for him that he can't play in the Olympics, let alone for us. But in spite of all of that disappointment, he can still find time to help others like that.

"It says a lot about his character. That's why he's so valuable off the ice as well as on."

Such charitable acts are the reason that general manager Brian Burke has enlisted the veteran blue-liner to do community relations work for the team once he has undergone surgery on the shoulder.
