On the day Brian Burke brought Dion Phaneuf to Toronto, the ornery Maple Leafs GM was not finished with his blockbuster wheeling and dealing.

Burke today acquired goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

Giguere, who won a Stanley Cup with Burke's Ducks in 2007, is seen as being a mentor to rookie goalie Jonas Gustavsson, much in the same way he helped Jonas Hiller in Anaheim.

Remember, too, that Giguere owes much of his success to goalie coach Francois Allaire, who is now with the Leafs organization.

While Giguere has a cap hit of $6 million US for next season, Burke's biggest coup might be the fact that he dumped Blake's salary. Blake is under contract for $4 million US in each of the next two seasons.

"This is a hard place to play," Burke said after packing up at the Air Canada Centre this afternoon. "Things just didn't work out here."

As for Toskala, who is a pending unrestricted free agent this summer, he was not going to be brought back to Toronto anyway.
