JONAS READY

Jonas Gustavsson realizes the final 28 games of the regular season are crucial.

Not so much for the Leafs to try to make the playoffs, as even a hot streak or two probably would not be enough for Toronto to make a serious playoff run.

But Gustavsson will be given a prime opportunity to show he can be the Leafs' goalie of the future.

"I know it is a big part of the season for me coming up," Gustavsson said. "My contract is up after the season and I know I have to play good to show I want to stay here.

"When I signed here, I did not look for a one-year situation, even though it was a one-year contract. I saw a bright future and I chose here. I am happy I did that."

RED'S ALL RIGHT

Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi surprised some when he said recently that Kings defenceman Jack Johnson did not grow as a player under legendary coach Red Berenson at the University of Michigan. Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek also played for Berenson.

"He is one of the best coaches I ever had," Komisarek said. "He develops guys and puts them in the NHL, and he made me a better person. He set the foundation for players like myself and Jack Johnson and many others in the NHL."
