BATTERED MARLIES

General manager Brian Burke isn't getting too worked up over the state of the AHL Marlies, who are 0-5-2 so far on an eight-game trip with 12 goals in that span and has them sitting last in their division.

"We've had about seven guys hurt," said Burke, rhyming off Darryl Boyce, Alex Foster, Christian Hanson, Ben Ondrus, Jonas Frogren and James Reimer to name some. "We've had to bring in some people on (tryout contracts)."

Burke was in Nashville Monday night, but planned to attend AHL meetings in Maine Tuesday, including speaking at a luncheon where ex-teammate and former Winnipeg Jets coach John Paddock is to be honoured.

LOOSE LEAFS

Burke's face lit up when told No. 1 pick Nazim Kadri had done well in a fight on Sunday against a bigger player, 6-foot-2 defenceman Tyler Cuma of the Ottawa 67s. Kadri, of the London Knights, had triggered the fight by crashing the Ottawa net ... There was a time the Predators wanted into the Eastern Conference to play teams such as the Leafs and geographical rivals Carolina and Atlanta. But they're resigned to Detroit and Columbus being first in line for any switch because they play in Eastern time zones, while the Preds feel they've built a strong rivalry with clubs such as Detroit and Chicago ... Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher, son of Leafs' senior advisor Cliff Fletcher, had his 2009 Stanley Cup ring from the Pittsburgh Penguins stolen during a robbery of his off-season home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
