Cody Smith got a breakaway from medical treatments yesterday and scored a visit with some Toronto Maple Leafs at The Hospital for Sick Children.

“It is exciting. I’m a big Leafs fan and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone,” the eight-year-old said.

“It is a special day,” said Cody’s dad, Dereck Smith. “It is so nice for him to be rewarded this way for everything he has gone through.”

Matthew Busby, 11, is a huge Leafs fan and couldn’t wait to meet the players, even if they aren’t having the best season.

“I think they are doing all right and I just want to meet them. Every one of them,” Matthew said.

The players signed autographs and handed out pictures, Leaf hats and shirts.

Defenceman Francois Beauchemin said he loves the annual team visit to Sick Kids.

“It is great to be here and make the kids laugh and put a smile on their face because they are going through some tough times,” Beauchemin said.

“For one day they get to see their favourite hockey players and it is great for us to be able to do this,” he added.

Coming to meet the fans at Sick Kids is part of the job, forward Matt Stajan said.

“It means a lot being a hockey player and coming to the hospital to make the kids smile,” Stajan said. “We do this every year, but I try to do it every month. The kids are going through a lot and they look up to us, so if we can give them a chat and a smile, it is just good for everyone.”
