Generation gap

In a continuing tribute to their glory days of the sixties, the Leafs wore vintage sweaters from the 1966-67 team in warmup, as if fans needed reminding of the last time their team won the Cup.

Matt Stajan retained his No. 14 with Dave Keon's name on the back, but the rest were a mixed bag, including Wayne Primeau as captain George Armstrong (10), Ian White as the late Tim Horton (7), Jonas Gustavsson as Johnny Bower (1) and Vesa Toskala as the late Terry Sawchuk (30).

Bob Nevin, Mike Walton and Red Kelly were honoured at the opening faceoff.

KEEP SMILING

Call it youthful enthusiasm, but the rookie Gustavsson refuses to get discouraged about being sidelined twice by a heart-related ailment just when it seems he's ready to establish himself in the NHL.

"Of course it's frustrating to be off of the ice," Gustavsson said.

"It's a new league for me and I have to try to get better all the time and take advantage of (playing) at this pace. When you get those (bad) breaks, you have to start over a bit, but on the positive side, you have to see if you have more energy now than if I would have (played more games)."

LOOSE LEAFS

RW Viktor Stalberg will have the puck from his first goal mounted and sent home to his parents in Gothenburg, Sweden. "It's not like I have a house of my own to put it on the wall," laughed Stalberg, who shares a place with fellow prospects Christian Hanson and Tyler Bozak.
