HACKING AWAY

It was akin to trying to chop down a Douglas Fir with a bread knife, but Matt Stajan tried anyway. Angry when 6-foot-9 Zdeno Chara got away with mugging him, Stajan took a slash at the Boston captain. He was called for a penalty but the Leafs killed it.

QUIET KESSEL

For the third time this month, the Bruins put the clamps on ex-teammate Phil Kessel. After no points, four shots and a minus-3 in two games earlier in December in Boston, he wound up with four shots on goal last night.

FINGER BACK IN

Jeff Finger was back in the lineup last night after getting the hook for Luke Schenn in Buffalo. Perhaps coach Ron Wilson thought Finger's 30th birthday on Friday was trauma enough for the defenceman. Garnet Exelby sat last night.

STICKIN' STALBERG

One night after scoring his first NHL goal, Leafs rookie Viktor Stalberg took a high stick from Boston's Blake Wheeler in the second period and did not return.
