JOHNNY ON THE SPOT

Islanders rookie and No. 1 pick overall John Tavares scored his first NHL goal in a Canadian rink (and his 14th of the season) when he buried a shot from the side of the net early in the third period. He added his second goal of the game later in the period.

HIT PARADE

Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn hasn't done much to get fans out of their seats this season but he did just that when he crushed Islanders forward Jon Sim along the boards late in the second period. Perhaps the sophomore heard coach Ron Wilson's pleas to get more physical.

POWER D

Prior to the first period, Leafs defenceman had scored just 11 goals through 30 games. That all changed when Francois Beauchemin recorded his third of the season and Ian White netted his fifth to stake Toronto to a 2-0 lead.
