NOT WILTING

Calls have started in earnest for the head of Ron Wilson, but the Maple Leafs coach insisted he feels more heat when he looks in the mirror.

"It's not nearly as great as the pressure we put on ourselves," Wilson said yesterday when he was asked about the public frustration with the Leafs' losing ways.

"We want to win more than the public wants us to win. We are professional athletes, coaches. It's not from the outside -- we want to win for our own selfish reasons."

DEPTH HELPS

The Washington Capitals are decimated by injuries but have been able to keep their heads above water thanks to a strong farm system. Their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, has been league champion in two of the past four years.

"We have guys in the minors who can step in and play right away," defenceman Mike Green said. "Guys like Mathieu Perreault (who had six points in eight games before last night) have come and made an impact. We have been able to cope."

The Capitals recently went 4-2 when Alexander Ovechkin was out with an upper-body strain.

Going into last night, the Bears were first in their division with a 13-5-0 record.

QUOTE, UNQUOTE

"This is probably as bad as I have felt since I have been here." -- Leafs defenceman Ian White on the being a part of just three wins in the team's first 20 games.
