Mike Komisarek’s pain may be Garnet Exelby’s gain.

After a couple of games relegated to the press box, Exelby is a possibility to return to the Leafs lineup for Friday's game in Chicago.

Komisarek played just 2:47 in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild before aggravating a leg injury that kept him out of much of Saturday’s game against Detroit.

Leafs coach Ron Wilson had no updates on Komisarek's status, but the big defenceman did not skate today at the Mastercard Centre and is at best doubtful for the contest against the Blackhawks.

Exelby, meanwhile, has been a healthy scratch six times this season including the past two games and hopes he gets a chance to make a positive impression tomorrow.

“It's been a little bit frustrating playing a week and not playing a week,” Exelby said today. “ It’s tough to get a groove on and build a game on top of that. If (Komisarek's) not ready to go, I’ve been chomping at the bit here for a little while so I’m excited to get back in the lineup.”

Exelby knows that with the depth on the blueline, he can’t afford to waste his opportunities.

“Nobody wants to be that guy fighting for ice time and fighting just to be in the lineup,” Exelby said. “That’s just the way it seems to be for me at the moment. When I do get a chance to get in, no matter what the circumstances are, I’m going to try to show well and do what I can to make that decision harder for the coaching staff in the future.”

Wilson said Vesa Toskala will likely start one of the two games slated for this weekend but didn't specify whether he was eying him for the game against the 'Hawks or Saturday's game against Calgary at the ACC.
