BUSY WEEK

This will be a busy few days for Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, with Hockey Hall of Fame celebrations for mentor Lou Lamoriello tonight and a game against the Minnesota Wild tomorrow in the midst of two days of NHL GMs meetings in Toronto.

Burke says he'll weigh in on the subject of head shots, which is expected to be front and centre in the discussions.

The GMs are expected to look again at ways to make fighting safer and possible changes to the trapezoid rule to help goalies save their defencemen risking serious injury from high-speed forecheckers.

If given the chance, Burke also will re-introduce a proposal to allow teams to eat some salary in a trade, to facilitate a very flat market in recent years.

Burke said jokingly that he's made seven attempts by his count to change the majority of his colleagues' mind, without success.

Loose Leafs

In his back-to-back wins, goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has stopped 69 of 72 shots ... Without a captain yet, coach Ron Wilson will send out his starting centre to take any ceremonial faceoffs such as Saturday's Hall of Fame game. John Mitchell went before a star-studded cast, as well as taking the draw with future Hall member and Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom. Not an ideal setup for traditionalists, but as Wilson noted: "Everyone gets to have their picture taken with (famous) people." ... The Leafs have killed 16 straight penalties through the past four games, but were still in 30th place before last night's action at 73%.
