WHY STEVIE?

Team Canada general manager Steve Yzerman was in the ACC press box last night, presumably to get a look at a trio of Lightning players -- Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier. Stamkos wasn't invited to the summer orientation camp but his quick start this season merits attention. The only Leaf on the radar is defenceman Francois Beauchemin.

WAKEY, BLAKEY

Dating back to last season, Jason Blake entered last night's contest with just one goal in his previous 21 games.

BIG BLAST

Who knew Rickard Wallin had such a shot? The Leafs centre let one rip during a short-handed situation in the second that caught Antero Niittymaki square in the noggin, relieving him of his mask.

HOT-HEADED HAGMAN

When Nik Hagman got a five-minute penalty for fighting in the first, his total penalty minutes on the season soared to nine, five more than last season.

UP NEXT

Friday -- Maple Leafs at Carolina Hurricanes, 7 p.m., Leafs TV, AM 640.

Would Patrick Roy make a good coach for the Colorado Avalanche?
  Yes, he's perfect
  No, he's not ready
  Bring him to Montreal!
