The Leafs aren't seeing much of top defensive prospect Jesse Blacker these days because of a dispute with his Windsor Spitfires junior club, while another top pick from 2009 might be crossing the border to join the same team.
Blacker, a 6-foot-1 defenceman picked 58th overall last year from the Memorial Cup champion Spits, has gone home after requesting a trade. A native of Riverdale in Toronto, Blacker distinguished himself at the Leafs rookie camp and played an exhibition game, but instead of being able to carry that momentum back to the OHL, he found himself stuck on the depth chart behind Ryan Ellis and Cam Fowler.
Meanwhile, right winger and Michigan native Kenny Ryan, whom the Leafs picked 50th overall in June, has departed Boston College and wants to hook up with the Spits. An agreement could be worked out this week.
Leafs defenceman Ian White was not at practice yesterday, still nursing a 25-stitch cut in his upper lip after being struck by a shot in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Rangers.
ZIGOMANIS TO TRY OUT
The Marlies have added Toronto-born forward Mike Zigomanis on a professional tryout contract.
Zigomanis, who has his name on the Stanley Cup for 22 games' service last season with Pittsburgh, has played almost 200 career games with Carolina, St. Louis, Phoenix and the Penguins. The 28-year-old, who played minor hockey for the Wexford Raiders, was Carolina's second-round pick in 2001.
