SICK BAY UPDATES

The news from the sick bay was mixed yesterday for the Maple Leafs.

Back up goaltender Jonas Gustavsson was placed on the injured reserve list with a groin injury and is expected to miss one week. Joey MacDonald was called up from the Marlies as a replacement. It's the second early season setback for the Swedish rookie, who missed part of training camp after doctors discovered he had an irregular heart beat.

"Hopefully I'll be back in five days," Gustavsson said yesterday. "That's what we're aiming for."

Rookie winger Viktor Stalberg probably is out until Monday's game in New York against the Rangers after having his bell rung by Ottawa defenceman Anton Volchenkov on Tuesday.

"He was fine (yesterday), he's got no (concussion-like) symptoms," coach Ron Wilson said. "We're hoping that we can get him back on the ice on Saturday and maybe get him passed for the game on Monday. Tuesday at the latest."

Centre Wayne Primeau, who has an undisclosed injury, is not expected to play either this weekend. Rookie bruiser Jay Rosehill practised on the fourth line yesterday with Colton Orr and centre Rickard Wallin.

LEARNING CURVE

Wilson believes some of Vesa Toskala's problems in goal may stem from the fact that he's learning a new style under the team's new goaltending coach Francois Allaire.

Wilson said that Gustavsson and MacDonald have worked with Allaire before and Marlies goaltender James Reimer already plays the style that Allaire condones, Toskala has to learn from scratch.
