MONSTER START
Jonas Gustavsson's first NHL save was a quick glove on Nicklas Backstrom after a nifty drop pass from Alex Ovechkin. He made two saves on his back that resulted from a Viktor Stalberg turnover before giving up his first goal to Alex Semin.
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
The Leafs won 2-1 here in their last visit in March, a game in which Ovechkin didn't play. But he made amends with a goal just 1:17 in and his three points gives him 23 in 16 career games versus Toronto.
TAKE THAT
After Washington's fifth goal, coach Ron Wilson sent his fourth-line bruisers out to send a little message. But the result was two giveaways and a roughing penalty to Jamal Mayers for chasing John Erskine around the ice and knocking his helmet.
