Ex-Leaf joins fire department
But his hiring causes 'stink' in Cornwall

CORNWALL -- Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Chad Kilger has been hired by the Cornwall Fire Department, beating out a field of 146 other candidates for one of three probationary firefighter positions.

Kilger's father, Bob Kilger, also happens to be the mayor of Cornwall.

One city councillor said the circumstances surrounding Kilger's hiring "stink big-time," however city officials insist he passed all of the necessary steps in the hiring process, making him a top candidate for one of the jobs.

According to Coun. Mark MacDonald, Kilger was cut out of the job competition only to be reinstated shortly after he filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request with the city for his results. MacDonald suggested Kilger received an unusually-swift response to his FOI request compared to the typical process.

Kilger quit the NHL in March, 2007, after the Leafs dealt his rights to the Florida Panthers.
