At 6-foot-3, 192 pounds, and with long, agile arms, Jonas Gustavsson has the size to come by his nickname, the Monster, honestly.

But that's not exactly how he came to get the handle that became familiar to Toronto hockey fans as the Leafs pursued the coveted Swedish free agent goaltender.

"It was in the playoffs one year and I had a couple of shutouts and a former coach was talking to some journalists," Gustavsson recalled yesterday. "He said: 'The defence was really good, the forwards did their job and then they had a monster in net.'

"I don't like to call myself the Monster because my personality is not like that. But my teammates like to make jokes and they started calling me: 'Monster.'

"I don't mind. It's kind of funny."
