No deal yet for Gilroy

Talks between the Maple Leafs and former Boston University defenceman Matt Gilroy continued yesterday, but no deal has been reached.

Dave Nonis, the Leafs Senior VP of Hockey Operations, said last night that talks will continue between the Leafs and the Hobey Baker Award winner. Boston University spokesman Brian Kelley said Gilory is going to take the next couple of days to decide which NHL team to sign with. The 6-2, 202-pound defenceman is undrafted and is a free agent.

Gilroy, a native of North Bellmore, N.Y., recently won the Hobey as the top collegiate player in the U.S. and guided the B.U. Terriers to the NCAA championship.

The Leafs have already signed a pair of highly-coveted U.S. college forwards, Tyler Bozak from the University of Denver and Christian Hanson of the University of Notre Dame.

The Leafs also held meetings this past weekend in Copenhagen with the agent of Swedish free agent goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, 24, who led his Swedish Elite team Farjestad to the championship last week.

Gustavsson finished the post-season with a stellar .961 save percentage and five shutouts.

Leafs GM Brian Burke described those talks as "excellent" and will meet with Gustavsson's agent, Par Larsson, after the world championship, which takes place later this month in Switzerland.

Are you surprised Don Cherry backed Daniel Alfredsson's comments?
  Yes.
  No.
It's Don Cherry - who knows what he will say.
  Not sure.
