Sundin laying low

LOS ANGELES -- Somewhere in sunny Southern California, Mats Sundin is apparently working out.

But short of combing some of the famous gyms in the Los Angeles area or guessing at which arena he may finally be getting some ice time, there likely won't be a public sighting of the big Swede this week.

The former Leafs captain, through his representatives, made it clear yesterday that he had no intention of commenting on his future, especially since the Leafs are in town to face the Kings tonight at the Staples Center.

Sundin has kept quiet since he chose California as the venue to return to prepare for a possible mid-season comeback.

But after new Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke essentially poured ice water on the prospect of Sundin returning to the Leafs, there is even less reason to break his silence.

While he was still employed by Anaheim, Burke talked to Sundin but said on Saturday that the Leafs "don't fit the profile he is looking for."

The week will be busy enough in the reunion department on a trip that includes tonight's game in Los Angeles, tomorrow in San Jose and Thursday in Phoenix.
