As contract negotiations were coming to a close, Brian Burke received the following e-mail.

"You are not in Kansas anymore," it said, a loose reference to the line from The Wizard of Oz.

The message: Life in the hockey fishbowl of Toronto, complete with the pressure, was far different than that in small-market Anaheim.

The author of the e-mail: Richard Peddie, president of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd.

Peddie feels Burke can handle the scrutiny of the spotlight that goes with running the Leafs, something the search committee was looking for.

"He is the perfect guy for all the reasons we have stated in the past. He's a winner. He's very experienced. And he can deal with you guys," Peddie said.

Gord Kirke, who, along with Peddie and Cliff Fletcher, made up the search committee, said there were about 30 names on the original list of candidates, but many of them wouldn't "be able to handle" the Toronto job.
