Things we know for sure about Sundin

Having a Remember-Mats Day wasn't my idea.

But as nice as it would be to forget the rangy Swede, we can't seem to avoid Mats Sundin's reach.

He's omnipresent, his dome glowing like a beacon from the other side of the continent.

Sundin, touring California, has been the subject of as much intrigue as Lindsay Lohan's (no relation) love life.

"Is Mrs. Mats pregnant?"

"Has she already given birth?"

"Is Mats skating yet or just working out on Muscle Beach, scorching his noggin under the warm California sun?"

Answers: Could be; Shouldn't we tell Mats?; Who cares?

Here is what we do know about the guy who refuses to go away:

a) Sundin has sold his house in Toronto. There's another 5.7 million Canadian dollars heading overseas to be invested in Swedish meatballs, Volvos and herring.

b) For all his namby-pamby "I want to finish my career as a Maple Leaf but I don't really know if I want to play" bunk, it would have been an appropriate gesture to donate his $5.7-million mansion to his fans. The place could have been converted into a nice Forest Hill rooming house.

c) Sundin didn't have to sell his house because of his poker activities.

d) Chris Higgins, who would have been one of the assets had the Leaf-for-life been willing to accept the trade to Montreal in March, scored three goals against Ottawa on Tuesday night.

e) Yesterday was the 13th.

THE BURKE BUNCH

You had to see this one coming: Brian Burke is resigning from the Anaheim Ducks to spend more time with his families.

T-BERT UNSCATHED

If you were the Leafs' Dominic Moore, wouldn't you have loved to take one good whack at the Calgary Flames' Todd Bertuzzi on Tuesday night, y'know, just for old time's sake?

RICKY RETURNS

It is less than four weeks now until the return of a former great, er good, er mediocre running back with the Argos.

Ricky Williams and his Miami Dolphins play the Rogers Bills in Toronto on Dec. 7.

Williams actually has fared better with the Dolphins than he did with the Argos. Last Sunday he rushed for 100 yards, which he hadn't done in years, since that time he had to outrun the NFL drug-testers.
