Mats will play -- Agent

Mats Sundin is back in town this week.

Not to sign with the Maple Leafs. Don't get carried away.

The big Swede is here to attend to some personal and business ventures. All the while, his hockey future remains up in the air.

Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, said his client has not made a decision. On and on it goes.

At the same time, Barry said yesterday he still strongly believes Sundin will return to the NHL this season. It is a stance Barry has maintained for weeks now.

"I have said all along I personally believe that Mats will play in the NHL this season," Barry said via e-mail.

"Of course, I have the benefit of looking him in the eyes every few weeks when we get together to discuss the future. From experience, I know the look of the eyes of a player who is retiring. That's not what I see with Mats."

The Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers are all said to remain interested in Sundin's services. The Leafs, meanwhile, still have enough cap space available to accommodate Sundin should he opt to return to Toronto.

THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE

Jeff Finger's injured foot continues to be a nagging problem.

To that end, Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher does not expect the steady defenceman to accompany the team on its trip to New York Friday for a meeting with the Rangers followed by a visit to Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena on Saturday.

"When we met after the St. Louis game (Monday), that was the thinking, anyway," Fletcher said. "We'll see if there is any improvement, but right now it does not appear as if he will be going on the trip."

Finger still is waiting to make his regular-season debut as a member of the Maple Leafs. He was signed to a whopping four-year, $14-million US free-agent deal during the summer.

Fletcher does expect defenceman Jonas Frogren to make the trip. Frogren took a shot off the foot during the Leafs 6-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday.
