The Maple Leafs have assigned forwards Mark Bell and Boyd Devereaux, as well as defenceman Staffan Kronwall, to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The Leafs, minus Bell, Devereaux and Kronwalll, will open the 2008-09 regular season against two original six rivals this week.

Toronto will play its first game of the season tonight at 7 p.m. when they visit the defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

On Saturday, Toronto will play host the Montreal Canadiens in its home opener at Air Canada Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.

BIG SPENDER

Defenceman Luke Schenn signed his rookie entry contract this week, but the son of a Saskatoon firefighter isn't about to go out and bye a new sports car or a million-dollar condo.

"The first thing I bought was a ticket to Carrie Underwood (Tuesday) night," said Schenn, referring to the American country and western singer who performed at the Air Canada Centre.

"It was awesome, but that's about all I've purchased so far."
