Veteran defenceman Tomas Kaberle, who could very well lead the Leafs in scoring this season, admits this could be a long and difficult season with the club in a rebuilding mode.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us and it's going to take a lot of chemistry. There's a lot of new guys here and we've got to get used to each other, especially the first couple of weeks," said Kaberle, adding that he's ready to step up in a leadership capacity.

"It's tough missing Caber (Bryan McCabe). Mats hasn't decided what to do. Tucks (Darcy Tucker) is somewhere else -- those guys were good players and good teammates on and off the ice. But throughout your career you're going to be playing with different teammates and you have to take it like that," he said.

"Mats was the main guy and obviously not having him here now, it's a little tough for everybody.

'FRESH START'

"But we have a lot of work ahead of us, we know that. Let's hope that Mats is going to come back. If not, a lot of forwards will have to step up. Thirty five, 40 goals a season is tough to get from someone else. But that's what we have right now, and it's a fresh start and we'll have to do it if he's here or not."

Kaberle said a playoff spot is not out of the realm of possibilities, despite the naysayers.

"It's always the goal," he said. "You don't want to just hang around and go through the season. You want to make the playoffs, that's the first part. Then we'll see. The playoffs is different hockey, a different atmosphere and anyone can win when you get there."
