When Cliff Fletcher looks into his blue-and-white crystal ball, he figures the odds are in favour of Mats Sundin returning to the Maple Leafs next year.

Make no mistake. Sundin has not told Fletcher that. Nor is there anything in writing.

In fact, Fletcher does not expect to hear a decision from the Leafs captain about his future until sometime around the June 20 entry draft.

The two men chatted briefly yesterday, a meeting that netted no definitive statement concerning Sundin's plans for 2008-09. Fletcher said they would talk again before the big Swede leaves town for the off-season.

So why is Fletcher optimistic?

"I can't speak for him but I think there is a good chance, based on how he has played this year," Fletcher told reporters.

"You guys saw what he said the other day. He said Toronto was the only team he wanted to play for. He made a pretty strong commitment at the trade deadline when he said he didn't want to play for another team."

Fletcher said the entire Toronto organization is unified in its desire to have Sundin return next season.

Either way, Sundin, who is out with a groin tear, is expected to take his time with the decision.
