Tickets set just in case

Whether the Maple Leafs make the playoffs or not, they are obliged to put the wheels in motion to offer post-season tickets.

A combined invoice for playoff and season tickets was mailed to subscribers last week. The team is not asking for playoff money until actual games take place, but requires the subscribers to declare their intention by April 1.

Season-ticket holders are being asked to put down a 20% deposit for 2008-09. Sun Media reported this week that the team is holding the line on prices next year. Last year, when the Leafs were also flirting with a playoff spot before getting eliminated on the last day of the season, about 80% of subscribers responded to the playoff call.

A RARE FEAT

This year's Leafs could have been history after playing the Philadelphia Flyers twice this week, but Pavel Kubina made some history instead.

According the Elias Sports Bureau, Kubina's overtime strike on Tuesday in Toronto and Wednesday's third-period goal made him the first Leafs defenceman in more than 40 years to have the game winner on back-to-back nights.

Bryan McCabe had a pair of game winners three years ago and Borje Salming once did it in the 1970s, but neither was accomplished in games on consecutive nights. Of Kubina's four game-winning goals as a Leaf, three have come in March of the past two years.

LOOSE LEAFS

Happy 77th birthday this week to ex-Leaf Danny Lewicki, the only player in hockey history to win a Stanley Cup, Memorial Cup and Allen Cup while still a junior-aged player. He was a teammate of Bill Barilko's on the '51 Cup team ... Twelve years ago yesterday, the Leafs re-acquired Wendel Clark along with Mathieu Schneider and D.J. Smith, from the Islanders for Kenny Jonsson, Darby Hendrickson and Sean Haggerty. Jonsson was a fine young defenceman, but the biggest loss for Toronto was giving up a first-round pick, which the Isles used on Roberto Luongo. Jonsson eventually returned to Sweden during the NHL lockout, but is apparently retired.
