Ian White was the victim last night as coach Paul Maurice ended his seven-man defence experiment.

White had not missed a game this season, but as long as Carlo Colaiacovo remains healthy he gives the team a better physical presence. White came to prominence at the start of 2006-07 when Colaiacovo suffered a training camp injury.

With 12 forwards employed once more, Chad Kilger returned after a five-game absence due to personal reasons, joined by Robbie Earl, while Kyle Wellwood went back in the doghouse.

REGRETS, FERG'S HAD A FEW

Fired general manager John Ferguson, now a TSN panelist, told viewers Wednesday night he believes there is a major haul of players and/or picks to be gained from a Mats Sundin trade if the captain is willing to waive his no-trade clause. Ferguson said it could be as lucrative as what the Philadelphia Flyers scooped for sending Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators a year ago today.

Ferguson said that prior to his sacking, he was getting plenty of calls from other teams for Sundin, defenceman Tomas Kaberle and to a lesser extent, defenceman Bryan McCabe. But all would have to agree to move. Ferguson added that he had a rebuilding plan in the works and regretted he would not have a chance to see it through.

FEDOROV NO THREAT, NO MATS

Of the five active players leading the NHL in game-winning goals, three are staying put at the trade deadline (Jaromir Jagr, Brendan Shanahan and Joe Sakic), while two (Sundin and Sergei Fedorov) are likely going to miss the playoffs.

But while Sundin is healthy if not agreeable to a trade, the Blue Jackets couldn't deal Fedorov if they wanted. He's been out of action two weeks with a concussion and though he's owed only $2 million US more on the $18.2 million deal he brought to Columbus in 2005, he has just 74 points in 181 games and is a minus-12. The Jackets come to visit next Tuesday.

LOOSE LEAFS

It was 51 years ago today that Maurice Richard recorded a hat trick against the Leafs, the only one of his four versus Toronto that came at the Gardens ... Since allowing three power-play goals against Florida, the Leafs were 10-for-10 penalty killing entering last night.
