Cliff notes a busy time

The week ahead will kick off what stands to be a significant month for the Maple Leafs.

General manager Cliff Fletcher feels trade talk around the league will begin heating up today as the Feb. 26 deadline approaches. Since taking on the job as interim general manager, he has spent the past 12 days consulting with people within the organization to get a feel for his new environment.

"I wouldn't say the process has been completed, but I do feel comfortable in the direction we are headed," Fletcher said yesterday. "We pretty much have a consensus when it comes to what we might be looking at doing."

Fletcher already has held sitdowns with Mats Sundin and Darcy Tucker, who both have no-trade clauses in their deals. Sundin has told both teammates and the media that he does not want to leave Toronto, while Tucker repeatedly has said to reporters that he likes being a Leaf.

Fletcher does not know when forward Chad Kilger might return to the lineup, although he does expect to receive an update today.

Kilger has missed the past two games because of personal reasons.

On the ice, the Leafs play host to the Florida Panthers tomorrow, travel to Montreal for a rare mid-week game against the Canadiens Thursday, then return home for an afternoon encounter Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings as part of CBC's Hockey Day in Canada.

Nik Antropov, who drew a three-game suspension for chucking his stick at the officials after the Leafs' 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday, will be eligible to return against Detroit.

CONFIDENT CARLO

Imagine the satisfaction Carlo Colaiacovo felt with being able to help the injury-ravaged Leafs defeat the Ottawa Senators 4-2 Saturday, scoring the winning goal early in the third period.

"Injuries are a part of the game you can't control," said Colaiacovo, who has been injured more times than he would like to count. "You just have to maintain your confidence and try to help out when you can."
