1. Jim Rutherford, Carolina Hurricanes GM.

Stanley Cup winner, the Toronto-area native is salary-cap smart.

2. Scotty Bowman, adviser Detroit Red Wings.

Antsy architect might have second thoughts about a lesser role here.

3. Brian Burke, president and GM Anaheim Ducks.

Only if Ducks miss the playoffs and MLSEL stays out of his way, both unlikely.

4. Ken Holland, GM Red Wings.

Depends on how promptly Steve Yzerman is fast tracked for top job.

5. Jim Nill, assistant GM, Red Wings.

Mentioned for many jobs, but right fit not found yet.

6. Doug Armstrong, ex-GM Dallas Stars.

Fired in the fall, but the most experienced GM without a job.

7. Glenn Healy, TSN analyst.

Sharp mind has support of one or two MLSEL board members, but he's new to Fletcher.

8. Colin Campbell, NHL vice-president.

Service up as NHL judge, with lots of big-name support to lobby for him.

9. Doug Gilmour

Totally inexperienced, but Fletcher connection improves his chances

10. Don Meehan, player agent.

Good relationship with Fletcher and could be thinking of a new challenge.

OUTSIDE SHOTS

Nashville Predators GM David Poile, former GM Neil Smith, player agents Mike Gillis and Brian Lawton, retired player Mark Messier, NHL vice-president Mike Murphy, Leafs coach Paul Maurice, Fletcher himself.
