Carlo not coming soon to a lineup near you

Don't expect healing defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs' final two exhibition games against the Detroit Red Wings.

Barring a last minute change of heart, the Leafs will keep Colaiacovo on the shelf in order to allow his surgically repaired knee to strengthen.

The decision casts even more doubt concerning Colaiacovo's availability for the season opener against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.

"If you go back to the date of the surgery, they said the recovery likely would be six months. Well, the six-month point is still three weeks from now," general manager John Ferguson said last night.

"The important thing is that he is completely recovered."

Colaiacovo did not practice with his teammates yesterday.

LOOSE LEAFS

Swedish defenceman Anton Stralman might want to go back to Sweden should he not make the Leafs, but keep in mind that Toronto controls his hockey-playing rights. Since there is no out clause in his contract, Stralman could be suspended if he did not report to the Marlies. In the event he doesn't make the parent club, the Leafs feel a stint on the farm would be the most beneficial path for his development.
