Bowman, Leafs tango drags on

The slow dance between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Scotty Bowman never seems to end.

Although the music has once again stopped playing.

Bowman recently had meetings with both Leafs CEO Richard Peddie and board chairman Larry Tanenbaum while he continues to maintain a public stance that he has no interest in leaving his consultants role with the Detroit Red Wings.

The role the Leafs talked to Bowman about of late was not that of advisor to general manager John Ferguson but to be the senior hockey voice in the organization.

If anything has been proven accurate in this continuing two-step with the legendary Bowman -- other than the Leafs inability to get a deal done -- it's that almost nothing Bowman has said for attribution can be believed.

The Leafs first went hard after Bowman in June, which he denied, but that fell apart because Tanenbaum and Peddie had alternate views of what his power base would be.

But the board pressed for the continuation of negotiations, and separate meetings in the final days of August, early days of September, ended up going nowhere.

For now, all is status quo with the Maple Leafs. For now.

THIS AND THAT: The betting here is that both manager John Gibbons and hitting coach Mickey Brantley will be sacrificed by general manager Never My Fault Ricciardi when this Blue Jays' season ends. If a new manager is hired, it will be Ricciardi's fourth in his time running the Jays ... The shortest list in sports: People implicated in steroid scandals who are actually innocent. A much longer list: Steroid users caught who deny, deny, deny any and all involvement, no matter the evidence might say.

HEAR AND THERE: What's this we've been hearing about Pinball Clemons' job being on the line as coach of the Argos? Sounds preposterous? Not if you're hanging around those who are hanging around with co-owner David Cynamon. Word is, had the Argos lost on Labour Day, Pinball might have been bounced ... Casey Printers actually looked like an NFL quarterback in his final exhibition games with the Kansas City Chiefs. But the quarterbacking world is shrinking in the NFL, costing him his job in KC and anywhere else for that matter. Almost half the NFL teams are carrying only two quarterbacks on their roster this season, cutting back from the traditional three ... One reason why the Argos should hang on to Mike McMahon, so long as McMahon wants to hang around: Anthony Calvillo was a failure in Las Vegas and Hamilton before becoming a star in Montreal. Quarterbacks need to be nurtured. They take time. Just askMichael Bishop ... Department of when it rains, it pours: The wife ofdisgraced NBA official Tim Donaghy has filed for divorce.

SCENE AND HEARD: Tom Barrasso has been named director of goaltending development for the Carolina Hurricanes. Among his responsibilities: Teaching goalies to be surly, abrupt, and discourteous. Just like he was ... What Russia needs: An On Ice Summit. Somebody call Ken Dryden for the blueprint.
